Level Crossing Removal Project
Blackburn Road Civil Works

Berne Fleming Civil was awarded the Blackburn Road Civil Works Package as part of a $481.2 million project awarded to Leighton Contractors as an alliance contract with the Victorian Government to design and construct four of Melbourne’s level crossing removals. The project is part of the Victorian government’s commitment to remove at least 20 level crossings by 2018.

Berne Fleming Civil was engaged by alliance partners CPB Contractors to undertake the works as part of the overall 41 day intensive shutdown ‘occupation period’, in which saw 400+ construction workers working 24/7 throughout the six week period. Berne Fleming Civils extensive 24/7 works program during the last remaining weeks of the ‘occupation period’ ensured the road was reopened on schedule to traffic at 5:00am on Monday 6th Febuary 2017.

Removing the level crossing at Blackburn Road has significantly improved traffic flow in the area; resulting in a safer and smoother travel experience for drivers and pedestrians. The boom gates will no longer be down for 54 minutes in the 2-hour morning peak, meaning improved travel times for the 16,000 vehicles that travel through the area each day.
